History of the Business
Kenneth Struve started a business in 1946 with various aspects including painting. He first built the little store -5- 5th Street, then built the existing building 501 N Broadway, to house the paint store. As time went on wallpaper, picture framing and art gallery were added followed by window treatments. The framing and art department were dropped when the window treatment department was added in the lae 70's. In the 80's Bruce Struve started buying the business from his father.
Products and Companies
Benjamin Moore Paint has been the main paint line for most of the time. Other lines were added, but are no longer carried. The full line of Benjamin Moore can be bought from Struve Paint.
A variety of paint sundries, stains, cleaning products, and related products are available in the paint department. Wallpaper flourished well in the 1900's and early 2000's; however, Struve's has continued to be a popular place to buy both custom order and in-stock wallpaper for many in southeastern Minnesota, and north eastern Iowa. The main lines of wallpaper include York, Brewster, Patton, Thibaut Seabrook and Wallquest. Other lines are available through Struve's. Hunter Douglas, Graber, Lafayette, and Horizon are the main window covering companies. Struve's belongs to America's Window Covering Buying Network, Inc which is a window fashionns buying group in Liberytville, IL. The drapery department has fabric books from Carole Fabric, RmCoCo, Lafayette, Hoizon, and Norbar. Most of these companies have their own work room to construct draperies and other soft treatments.
The Paint department is on the main level of the building while the wallcovering, window treatment, and fabric departments are on the second level of the building.
Potential Opportunities
Struve Paint and Decorating is one of the only full line decorating stores selling the above products in southeastern Minnesota. Rochester is a growing community with residential homes, townhomes, apartments, senior living, hotels, and many other types of buildings being built. The Mayo Clinic, and related Methodist Hospital are near by and may be potential clients. St. Mary's Hospital buys cetain products from Struve's. Typically Struve's has sold to the DYI, but can easily expand to serve contractors and designers. One of the specialties is in stain matching. Even other businesses send their customers to Struve's to get a correct match.
Training
We would prefer selling the business to someone who has a background in paint and window treatments; however, we will be available to train a new person who has a good eye for color and design.
